Tom Cruise’s Digger Had an Indian Twist! Vir Das Auditioned, Fahadh Faasil Walked Away Before Riz Ahmed Landed the Role

Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s much-awaited Hollywood satire is making headlines for more than Tom Cruise’s transformation. New revelations show that two acclaimed Indian actors were once in the race for a key role before Riz Ahmed ultimately came on board.

When the trailer for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming Hollywood film Digger dropped, fans couldn’t stop talking about one thing—Tom Cruise’s unbelievable transformation. Looking almost unrecognisable as billionaire oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, Cruise appears to be delivering one of the boldest performances of his career.

But while Tom Cruise dominated the trailer, another revelation quietly exploded across social media.

It turns out that Riz Ahmed wasn’t the only actor considered for one of the film’s pivotal roles. Before the Oscar-nominated British actor officially joined the cast, two Indian stars—Vir Das and Fahadh Faasil—were also in contention, making Digger a rare Hollywood project that came surprisingly close to featuring Indian talent in a major international production.

The revelation has sparked widespread discussion among fans, many of whom are now wondering what the film might have looked like had either Indian actor signed on.

Vir Das Reveals He Auditioned for Digger

The biggest surprise came from Vir Das, who recently disclosed that he had auditioned for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s ambitious film.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), which was later deleted but quickly circulated through screenshots across social media, the comedian-actor admitted that he had gone through two rounds of auditions for the project.

Vir candidly shared that although the role eventually went to Riz Ahmed, he was deeply disappointed after missing out.

Calling the screenplay “insanity in the best possible way,” Vir hinted that the film’s writing impressed him immensely and admitted that losing the role was emotionally difficult.

The honesty of his confession struck a chord with fans, many of whom praised him for openly discussing an audition that didn’t go his way instead of pretending it never happened.

Fahadh Faasil Came Even Closer

While Vir Das actually auditioned, Fahadh Faasil’s journey reached an entirely different stage.

The acclaimed Malayalam actor had previously confirmed that he was in discussions with Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s team for the same project.

However, unlike a traditional rejection story, Fahadh explained that the opportunity slipped away because of practical challenges rather than performance.

According to the actor, the production wanted him to perfect an American accent before filming.

That preparation required relocating to the United States for nearly four months.

Since the production wasn’t covering those expenses and the logistics didn’t make commercial sense for him, Fahadh ultimately decided not to pursue the opportunity.

The actor later revealed that he even had a detailed video conversation with Iñárritu, suggesting that the filmmaker eventually realised the role might not be the right fit under those circumstances.

Why Riz Ahmed Was the Perfect Choice

Although fans have begun debating whether Vir Das or Fahadh Faasil would have brought something different to the film, Riz Ahmed’s casting now appears to make perfect sense.

Known for seamlessly moving between independent cinema and Hollywood blockbusters, Riz has built an international reputation for delivering emotionally layered performances while naturally fitting into global productions.

His fluency with multiple accents, cultural versatility and extensive Hollywood experience likely made him the safest creative choice for a film carrying enormous international expectations.

After watching the trailer, many viewers agreed that Riz appears completely comfortable sharing screen space with Tom Cruise, further validating the filmmakers’ decision.

Tom Cruise Is the Biggest Attraction

Despite the casting discussions, Tom Cruise remains the film’s biggest headline.

The trailer showcases the Hollywood superstar in a completely different avatar from his recent action-heavy performances.

Instead of saving the world through impossible stunts, Cruise portrays Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oil magnate whose actions allegedly push humanity toward catastrophe.

As global disaster unfolds, his character desperately attempts to convince the world that he is actually its saviour.

The darkly satirical premise has immediately drawn comparisons with Iñárritu’s signature storytelling style, blending humour, politics and psychological drama into one ambitious cinematic experience.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu Returns to English Cinema

For movie lovers, Digger carries significance beyond its star cast.

The project marks Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since The Revenant (2015), the survival epic that earned Leonardo DiCaprio his long-awaited Academy Award.

Over the years, Iñárritu has established himself as one of contemporary cinema’s most respected filmmakers with critically acclaimed works like Birdman, Babel, Biutiful and The Revenant.

His return to English-language filmmaking has naturally generated enormous curiosity across Hollywood and international film circles.

A Stellar Ensemble Cast

While Tom Cruise and Riz Ahmed dominate the promotional material, Digger also features an impressive ensemble cast.

The film stars John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons, creating one of the strongest actor line-ups of the year.

Written by Alejandro G. Iñárritu alongside Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Nicolás Giacobone, the film promises a unique blend of satire, social commentary and large-scale cinematic spectacle.

With its October 2 release approaching, expectations are rapidly building.

What This Means for Indian Actors in Hollywood

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this revelation is what it says about Indian actors increasingly entering global conversations.

The fact that Vir Das auditioned multiple times while Fahadh Faasil reached advanced discussions demonstrates that Hollywood studios are now actively considering Indian performers for substantial roles rather than limiting them to stereotypical characters.

Although neither actor ultimately joined Digger, their involvement reflects the growing international recognition of Indian talent.

Following the global success of actors like Irrfan Khan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Ali Fazal, Dev Patel and now increasing international interest in South Indian performers, opportunities for Indian actors continue expanding.

Fans Are Divided

As expected, social media has transformed the revelation into a passionate debate.

Some users believe Vir Das’ comic timing could have added a fresh dimension to the film’s satirical tone.

Others argue Fahadh Faasil’s understated acting style would have perfectly matched Iñárritu’s emotionally layered filmmaking.

Meanwhile, many feel Riz Ahmed remains the ideal choice because of his proven international credentials and experience working with globally acclaimed directors.

Interestingly, there is no widespread disappointment—only curiosity about the alternate versions of the film that audiences will never get to see.

The Bigger Picture

The revelation surrounding Digger serves as a reminder that major Hollywood films often go through multiple casting possibilities before audiences ever see the final product.

For Vir Das, the audition itself signals his growing visibility in international cinema.

For Fahadh Faasil, the story reinforces that global opportunities are now knocking on the doors of Indian stars from every industry—not just Bollywood.

And for Riz Ahmed, landing the role further strengthens his position as one of the most respected South Asian actors working on the world stage today.

As for Tom Cruise, his transformation, combined with Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s visionary direction, has already made Digger one of the most anticipated Hollywood releases of the year.

Whether audiences remember the film for its ambitious storytelling, Cruise’s performance or the fascinating casting stories that emerged behind the scenes, one thing is clear—Digger has already begun generating blockbuster-level conversation months before its release.

With Tom Cruise leading the charge and an unexpected Indian connection now making headlines, the buzz surrounding Digger is only getting bigger.
