Mahaprabhu Jagannath Makes History! Odisha’s First Animated Feature Film Aims to Create India’s Next Mythology Universe

From television success to a nationwide theatrical release, Ele Animations’ Mahaprabhu Jagannath is not just another animated movie—it could become the beginning of India’s biggest Sanatan-inspired animation universe.

Indian animation is witnessing a landmark moment.

For decades, audiences have watched international animated heroes dominate cinema screens while Indian mythology largely remained confined to television serials and occasional films. Now, Odisha is rewriting that narrative with Mahaprabhu Jagannath, the state’s first-ever animated feature film, and more importantly, the first animated theatrical film dedicated entirely to Lord Jagannath.

Released across more than 300 screens in Hindi, Odia and Telugu, the ambitious project represents far more than a movie release. It is a statement that Indian animation is finally ready to tell homegrown stories on a grand cinematic scale.

Backed by Ele Animations Pvt Ltd and distributed with the support of Toonz Media Group, the film marks one of the most significant developments for India’s growing animation industry.

From TV Success to the Big Screen

The journey of Mahaprabhu Jagannath actually began on television.

In 2024, children across India embraced Jay Jagannath, an animated series airing on POGO that introduced audiences to the childhood adventures of Lord Jagannath, affectionately portrayed as Jagan alongside his companion Balaram.

The show’s popularity exceeded expectations.

That success convinced Ele Animations that the beloved universe deserved a much larger canvas.

Instead of limiting the mythology to television episodes, the studio decided to create a full-length theatrical adventure featuring Lord Jagannath battling powerful forces of darkness.

The result is Mahaprabhu Jagannath, directed by Shripad Warkhedkar, with story and screenplay by Pallavi Sharma.

A Different Kind of Mythological Adventure

Unlike traditional devotional adaptations, Mahaprabhu Jagannath blends spirituality with cinematic storytelling.

The film follows Jagan, Balaram and Garud as they confront an evil force known as Aham, creating an adventure designed to entertain younger audiences while preserving the spiritual essence of Lord Jagannath’s legacy.

Rather than relying purely on religious narration, the film embraces the style of modern animated fantasy adventures.

This balance between mythology and entertainment could become its greatest strength.

Today’s younger viewers often connect more deeply with visually engaging storytelling than conventional educational formats.

The makers appear fully aware of that shift.

The Vision of Durga Prasad Dalai

Behind this ambitious project stands Durga Prasad Dalai, founder and CEO of Ele Animations.

His journey reflects years of determination rather than overnight success.

Originally fascinated by both storytelling and animation, Durga studied animation while simultaneously completing his college education and balancing part-time jobs.

Although he initially worked in Hyderabad and Delhi, he eventually returned to Odisha with a dream that many considered impossible.

There was virtually no established animation ecosystem in the state.

Instead of relocating permanently, he decided to build one himself.

That decision eventually led to the creation of Ele Animations in Bhubaneswar in 2008.

Building an Industry From Scratch

Like many successful startups, Ele Animations began modestly.

Initially producing e-learning content, the company later expanded into children’s programming for YouTube channels, eventually serving clients from 36 countries.

At one point, nearly 90 percent of the studio’s work focused on children’s content.

That experience quietly prepared the team for much larger ambitions.

Five years ago, the company shifted its focus toward developing original intellectual properties (IPs), recognising that owning characters and stories would provide long-term creative independence.

That strategy eventually produced Jay Jagannath, which has now evolved into a full-fledged theatrical franchise.

A Risk Few Were Willing to Take

Creating an animated feature based on Indian spirituality was never considered a safe commercial decision.

Durga Prasad himself has acknowledged that distributors and theatre owners initially showed limited enthusiasm.

Recent history had offered mixed signals.

While certain Indian animated films struggled commercially, projects inspired by mythology demonstrated that audiences remained interested when stories were executed effectively.

The success of recent mythology-driven animated cinema helped restore confidence within the industry.

That optimism encouraged Ele Animations to move forward despite significant financial and production challenges.

Now the real test begins at the box office.

Why Mahaprabhu Jagannath Matters

The significance of this release extends well beyond Odisha.

For years, India’s animation industry has largely depended on television properties or outsourced international work.

Original Indian theatrical animation has remained surprisingly limited despite the country’s rich storytelling traditions.

Mahaprabhu Jagannath challenges that pattern.

It demonstrates that regional studios can develop ambitious animated features rooted entirely in Indian culture without relying on foreign franchises.

If successful, the film could encourage investors to support more locally created animated universes.

The Birth of a Sanatan Universe

Perhaps the biggest surprise isn’t this film itself.

It’s what comes next.

Durga Prasad has already revealed plans for an interconnected Sanatan Universe, inspired by India’s vast spiritual heritage.

Future projects reportedly include another feature exploring the origin of Lord Jagannath and the construction of the famous temple.

The studio is also developing Mere Bhole, an animated children’s series centred around Lord Shiva.

Beyond that, stories inspired by Lord Hanuman, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Kali and Goddess Durga are already part of the long-term roadmap.

Even ancient texts like the Vedas and Upanishads may eventually receive modern animated adaptations designed specifically for younger audiences.

In an era dominated by cinematic universes, Ele Animations appears ready to create India’s first mythology-focused animation franchise.

Competing With Global Giants

Indian animation has often been compared with international studios like Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks.

Rather than imitating those studios, Mahaprabhu Jagannath takes a different approach.

Its competitive advantage lies in cultural authenticity.

Millions of Indian children already grow up hearing stories about Lord Jagannath, Hanuman, Shiva and Durga.

Animation simply provides a modern visual language to introduce those legends to a digital generation.

Instead of superheroes from distant fictional cities, children can now connect with characters deeply rooted in India’s own traditions.

A Much-Needed Wake-Up Call

Durga Prasad also raises an important concern about India’s animation landscape.

According to him, the industry has become overly comfortable with repeating familiar formulas.

While iconic characters like Chhota Bheem, Motu Patlu and Little Singham achieved remarkable popularity, innovation has gradually slowed.

Today’s audiences expect stronger storytelling, richer world-building and emotionally engaging narratives.

Regional cinema has already proven that original stories can achieve nationwide success.

Animation, he believes, must now undergo the same creative evolution.

Mahaprabhu Jagannath could become one of the first major steps in that direction.

The Bigger Picture

The release of Mahaprabhu Jagannath is more than another Friday at the movies.

It represents the arrival of a new creative ambition within Indian entertainment.

By combining mythology, animation and cinematic storytelling, Ele Animations hopes to create a sustainable franchise capable of entertaining children while preserving India’s cultural heritage.

Whether the film becomes a blockbuster or simply opens new doors for independent animation studios, its importance is undeniable.

For Odisha, it marks a historic achievement.

For Indian animation, it offers fresh hope.

And for audiences, it presents something increasingly rare—a homegrown animated adventure inspired entirely by Indian mythology, designed not merely to educate but to entertain on the grandest cinematic stage.

If Mahaprabhu Jagannath succeeds, the future could see an entirely new generation of Indian animated heroes lighting up theatres across the country.

The journey has only just begun.
