Koffee With Karan 9: Salman Khan Opens the Final Season, and Karan Johar Says “It Can Go Anywhere”

The farewell season premieres Oct. 14 on JioHotstar with Bhaijaan on the couch, and the rest of the guest list is already stirring up gossip.

MUMBAI: The world’s most famous orange couch is about to take its final bow, and Karan Johar has saved the biggest name for the opening night. Salman Khan will be the first guest on Koffee With Karan Season 9, the last season of the show that has shaped celebrity gossip in India for more than two decades.

Karan shared a promo on Instagram, captioned “One last time… a koffee with the one & only bhaii,” confirming that the season will stream from Oct. 14 on The Peacock Hub on JioHotstar.

The Promo That Has Fans Talking

In the teaser, Salman announces in his usual style that he’s coming to do Koffee With Karan. Karan then jokes that since this is the last season, the conversation could go anywhere. Salman’s reply, “Jayega, jayega” (it’ll go), has already become the line of the day.

It’s a smart tease. Salman rarely sits for long, personal chats, and the promo hints that nothing is off limits. Reports say he has already shot the premiere episode as a solo guest.

Why Is Karan Ending the Show?

According to Karan, it’s an emotional and personal decision. He told Variety that the show has been a huge part of his identity, and that it’s hard to believe 22 years have passed. He said he wants to spend the next decade directing more films and telling more stories, so with a heavy heart he is making this season his last.

He also acknowledged what the show has meant: a couch that has been synonymous with conversations, candour and controversies. He hopes the legacy of love the show has given him will keep brewing in people’s hearts.

A Quick Look Back

Koffee With Karan premiered in 2004 on Star World, with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as the first guests. The first season also featured Amitabh Bachchan with his son Abhishek, while Aishwarya Rai appeared with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The show ran for six seasons on Star World until 2019, with Season 2 also simulcast on Star One in 2007. By Season 6, episodes were also streaming on Hotstar. In 2022, it moved to a streaming-first model, and the latest season arrives on JioHotstar.

Salman is no stranger to the couch. He opened Season 4 in 2013 alongside his father, Salim Khan, and appeared in the milestone 100th episode in Season 5 with his brothers Arbaaz and Sohail. His last appearance was in 2016, so this return comes after a decade.

The Rest of the Season: What’s Rumoured

Reports suggest a long, star-packed lineup. Names mentioned include Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, Ananya Panday with Ananya Birla, Sara Ali Khan with Ibrahim Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan with Saif Ali Khan, Alia Bhatt with Shaheen Bhatt, and Varun Dhawan with Janhvi Kapoor. Vedang Raina, Sharvari Wagh and Lakshya are also reportedly on the list, and Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani are said to be an expected pairing. These names haven’t all been officially confirmed.

Why Salman as the Opener Is a Masterstroke

The timing couldn’t be better. Salman has been in the headlines thanks to his hosting of Bigg Boss 20, with his strong remarks on trolls and body-shaming and his candid story about Dus Ka Dum. He is in a reflective, outspoken mood, and a chat with Karan could bring out even more.

Karan, meanwhile, has long balanced affection and mischief in his questions. Between the rapid-fire round, the confessions and the famously awkward silences, a Salman episode is almost guaranteed to produce viral clips.

What the Final Season Means

For fans: It is the end of an era. Whatever your opinion of the show, it has been a fixture of Bollywood for 22 years, and the farewell season invites nostalgia, memes and plenty of “best of” lists.

For Karan Johar: Stepping away from hosting frees him to focus on directing. After years of wearing many hats as producer, studio head and TV host, a return to the director’s chair could mean fresh films. It also ends one of the most recognisable parts of his public persona.

For celebrities: Stars have used the couch to promote films, announce relationships and settle old scores. With the show ending, publicists will lose one of their favourite platforms, and actors may rely more on podcasts, social media and interviews.

For JioHotstar: The platform has a major event on its hands, and a final season is the sort of marketing hook that can drive subscriptions. Expect weekly episodes to dominate social media.

For the talk-show genre: There’s a gap to fill. Many shows have tried to imitate the format, but none has matched its mix of glamour, gossip and controversy. Whether another host or format takes over remains to be seen.

What to Watch Next

  • The guest list: Official confirmations will clarify which rumours are true.
  • Famous moments: Fans are already predicting hampers, hamper-gate-style surprises and rapid-fire shockers.
  • Karan’s next film: With more time on his hands, announcements could follow.

The Bottom Line

Twenty-two years, nine seasons and one orange couch have shaped Bollywood’s gossip culture. Now Karan Johar is closing the final chapter with the one guest who needs no introduction. If the promo is any indication, the last cup of koffee will be a strong one.
