Anupam Kher Defends Daler Mehndi After Uttarakhand Minister’s Viral On-Stage Clash: ‘Was It Necessary to Insult Him?’

Anupam Kher has questioned BJP minister Subodh Uniyal’s public confrontation with Daler Mehndi, insisting the singer does not drink alcohol and has been unwell for years. With Mika Singh and other celebrities also backing the music star, the controversy has ignited a bigger debate about respect, live performance standards and accountability.

The entertainment industry has found itself in the middle of a fiery controversy after Punjabi music icon Daler Mehndi’s performance at a cultural event in Uttarakhand turned into a public confrontation. Now, veteran actor Anupam Kher has stepped forward to defend the singer, questioning why a celebrated artist had to be reprimanded in front of an audience rather than being approached privately.

The incident, involving Uttarakhand minister Subodh Uniyal, has sparked intense discussion on social media, with celebrities weighing in on the treatment of performers, the responsibilities of event organisers and the importance of maintaining dignity in public spaces.

Kher’s intervention has added a powerful voice to the debate. While the minister questioned Mehndi’s condition and ability to perform, the actor has challenged the manner in which the situation was handled, arguing that an artist’s decades of contribution deserve consideration even when concerns arise over a particular performance.

And that is where this controversy gets complicated: the debate is no longer limited to whether the performance met expectations. It is also about whether public criticism from a person in authority was the right way to address the situation.

Anupam Kher Comes Out in Support of Daler Mehndi

In a video message, Anupam Kher expressed sadness over the confrontation and questioned the need to publicly embarrass Daler Mehndi.

The actor, who said he had known the singer for approximately 25 to 30 years, spoke strongly about his personal experience of Mehndi’s character. Kher stated that the singer does not consume alcohol and described him as one of the finest human beings he has met.

Kher also revealed that Mehndi had been unwell for the past two to three years. According to the actor, the singer may have attended the programme because of a prior professional commitment that he did not want to abandon.

For Kher, that decision reflected professionalism.

He suggested that if Mehndi had concerns about his health, or if his performance had fallen short of expectations, the situation could have been handled through a private conversation. Publicly questioning an artist in front of an audience, he argued, risked turning a professional disagreement into an episode of humiliation.

Kher also acknowledged questions surrounding the performance, including whether Mehndi was lip-syncing. However, he maintained that such concerns did not justify publicly accusing or insulting someone.

His message was clear: criticism may be legitimate, but the manner in which it is delivered matters.

It is important to distinguish Kher’s personal defence from independently established facts. His statement reflects his knowledge of Mehndi and his interpretation of the incident; it does not, by itself, establish what caused the singer’s apparent difficulties during the performance.

What Happened at the Kunjapuri Mela?

The controversy erupted during the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in the Narendra Nagar area of Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district.

Daler Mehndi was performing at a cultural programme associated with the Navratri celebrations when minister Subodh Uniyal walked onto the stage and confronted him.

Videos circulating online showed the minister questioning the singer’s ability to perform and alleging that he was under the influence of alcohol. Uniyal also questioned why Mehndi was continuing to sing when, in his view, the singer was struggling to speak properly.

The minister reportedly expressed disappointment over the quality of the performance and the money paid for the appearance. Reports put the singer’s fee at approximately ₹35 lakh, apart from accommodation and travel expenses.

The allegation of intoxication remains an allegation; it should not be treated as an established fact merely because it was made publicly.

The exchange quickly became a social media talking point. In the viral footage, Mehndi appeared to respond to the minister and ask him to leave the stage, as the situation became increasingly uncomfortable.

What was expected to be a musical highlight of the event instead became a controversy involving a prominent singer, a state minister and a crowd watching the confrontation unfold.

The incident has raised questions about how disagreements between organisers and performers should be managed, especially at publicly funded or community cultural events.

Anupam Kher Says Daler Mehndi’s Legacy Deserves Respect

Kher’s defence was not limited to the question of alcohol. He also highlighted Mehndi’s contribution to Indian music over several decades.

The singer became one of the defining voices of Punjabi pop in the 1990s, helping bring energetic Punjabi music and bhangra-inspired sounds into mainstream Indian entertainment. Songs such as Tunak Tunak Tun and Bolo Ta Ra Ra became widely recognised, while his distinctive voice, colourful presentation and high-energy style made him a familiar name across generations.

Kher argued that an artist builds recognition and respect through years of hard work, and that Mehndi’s contribution to music should not be dismissed because of one controversial performance.

The actor’s point also touches on a wider reality of live entertainment: performers are judged in real time, often under pressure, and audiences expect the experience they have paid to see. At the same time, health concerns, technical problems and disagreements over performance quality can create difficult situations.

A star’s reputation does not automatically place them beyond criticism. Equally, criticism does not have to become personal humiliation.

That balance is at the heart of the debate now unfolding.

Kher Urges Bollywood to Stand by the Singer

Kher also called on the entertainment industry to support Mehndi, saying that it should not be left to the singer’s brother, Mika Singh, to speak up for him.

The actor urged industry colleagues to take a stand for people they know when they believe those people have been treated unfairly.

His appeal broadens the issue beyond one confrontation. The entertainment industry often depends on professional relationships, shared stages and public reputations. When a controversy goes viral, a colleague’s support can influence how audiences interpret the incident.

However, celebrity solidarity can also intensify a dispute by turning a disagreement into a larger public contest over who is right.

For Mehndi, support from established figures such as Kher could help counter the immediate reputational damage caused by the viral footage. Yet the controversy may not disappear simply because fellow celebrities have defended him. Questions about what happened during the performance, and whether the audience received what it expected, remain separate issues.

Mika Singh and Other Celebrities Join the Debate

Mika Singh has also defended his elder brother amid the controversy. Other entertainment personalities, including Kapil Sharma, Badshah and Harshdeep Kaur, have expressed support for Mehndi, with concern over his health and criticism of the public confrontation featuring in the wider reaction.

Mika’s comments have drawn attention to the possibility that Mehndi’s condition may have been affected by a recent medical procedure. That context, however, does not independently establish the reason for his difficulties on stage or settle the minister’s allegations.

The response from the entertainment industry has also highlighted a distinction that is easy to miss in viral debates: supporting an artist against public humiliation is not necessarily the same as declaring every aspect of a performance satisfactory.

As reactions multiply, the controversy risks becoming a battle between competing interpretations of the same footage. Some viewers may focus on the singer’s apparent struggle to perform; others may question the minister’s decision to intervene publicly.

Both audience expectations and an artist’s dignity are legitimate subjects for discussion. The challenge is to examine them without treating unverified allegations as proven facts.

Could the Controversy Affect Daler Mehndi’s Career?

For now, the immediate impact is reputational rather than demonstrably professional. There is no confirmed indication that the incident has led to cancelled shows, lost contracts or formal action against the singer.

Nevertheless, viral controversies can influence public perception quickly. Event organisers may become more cautious when booking performers, while audiences may scrutinise future appearances more closely. On the other hand, strong support from fans and industry colleagues could help Mehndi move beyond the incident.

The longer-term consequences will depend on whether further information clarifies what happened, whether the parties issue additional statements and whether the dispute is resolved publicly.

The incident could also prompt organisers to review how they respond when a performance goes wrong. Clear communication, contingency plans for health-related issues and a designated representative to handle disputes could prevent a difficult moment from escalating into a public spectacle.

For public officials, the episode raises a separate question about conduct and authority. A minister may have legitimate concerns about a cultural event, public expenditure or audience expectations. But the way those concerns are communicated can become just as important as the concerns themselves.

The Bigger Question: Accountability Without Humiliation

Anupam Kher’s defence of Daler Mehndi has turned a viral stage confrontation into a wider discussion about professionalism, respect and public accountability.

Kher has made his position clear: based on his personal experience, he does not believe the allegations about Mehndi drinking alcohol, and he considers the public reprimand unfair. The minister, meanwhile, has defended his intervention on the grounds that the performance did not meet expectations.

Neither celebrity support nor a viral accusation should replace a careful examination of the available evidence.

Artists who accept paid engagements have responsibilities to organisers and audiences. Event organisers, in turn, have responsibilities to communicate concerns fairly and manage problems professionally. When public figures disagree, the presence of cameras and microphones can make an already tense moment much more damaging.

For Daler Mehndi, the priority now may be to address concerns surrounding his performance while allowing the facts to emerge. For the organisers and officials involved, the episode is a reminder that public events require both accountability and composure.

And for Bollywood and the music industry, Kher’s message is a call to consider how colleagues are treated when they find themselves at the centre of a viral controversy.

The biggest question is not simply whether Daler Mehndi delivered the performance the audience expected. It is whether a difficult professional situation could have been handled without turning it into a public confrontation.

That question is likely to remain at the centre of the debate long after the viral video stops trending.
