China Box Office Shock! ‘The Furious’ Knocks Out ‘Dear You’ to Claim No.1 Spot, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ Makes Quiet Entry

Kenji Tanigaki’s action thriller storms to the top while China’s slowing box office raises fresh questions about the future of theatrical business.

The Chinese box office has witnessed a dramatic shake-up this weekend as high-octane action thriller The Furious roared to the top position, ending the remarkable dominance of family drama Dear You and proving once again that audiences in China still have a massive appetite for adrenaline-filled action spectacles.

Released on June 11, The Furious has wasted no time establishing itself as the country’s newest box office champion. During the June 12–14 weekend, the film earned an impressive RMB 76.1 million (approximately $11.2 million), becoming the highest-grossing title of the weekend and collecting a cumulative total of $13.9 million within just a few days of release.

Directed by celebrated action choreographer and filmmaker Kenji Tanigaki and produced by internationally acclaimed producer Bill Kong, the film tells an emotionally charged revenge story centered around Wang Wei, an ordinary father played by martial arts star Xie Miao, whose life turns upside down after his daughter is kidnapped by a ruthless child trafficking syndicate.

Unable to trust corrupt local authorities, Wang Wei launches his own violent mission to rescue his daughter, finding an unlikely ally in investigative journalist Navin, portrayed by Indonesian action icon Joe Taslim, who is simultaneously searching for his missing wife.

The gripping storyline combined with stylish martial arts choreography and emotionally driven action sequences has struck a chord with audiences, generating strong word-of-mouth across Chinese social media platforms.

Industry analysts believe The Furious could continue its winning streak over the coming weeks, especially as action films traditionally perform strongly in China’s theatrical market.

However, despite losing the top position, Dear You remains one of the biggest cinematic success stories of the year.

The emotional family drama added another $8.9 million during the weekend, taking its remarkable lifetime earnings to $255.7 million since its release on April 30.

Directed by Lan Hongchun, the film has become a surprise blockbuster thanks to overwhelmingly positive audience reactions and emotional storytelling.

The narrative follows an elderly Chaoshan woman whose peaceful life changes forever after her grandson travels to Thailand searching for his rumored billionaire grandfather, uncovering forgotten family secrets and a decades-old love story connected to the traditional Chinese Qiaopi handwritten letter system.

Its extraordinary box office journey demonstrates that emotionally resonant stories continue to find massive audiences even amid increasing competition from spectacle-driven entertainment.

Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg also entered the Chinese market this weekend with his latest science-fiction thriller Disclosure Day, but the opening numbers remained relatively modest.

The film debuted in third place, collecting $2.9 million during its opening three-day weekend.

Although Spielberg remains one of cinema’s biggest names globally, industry observers suggest that local Chinese productions currently enjoy stronger audience loyalty, making it increasingly challenging for imported Hollywood films to dominate the country’s box office.

Meanwhile, crime thriller Vanishing Point continues its steady theatrical run.

The mystery drama earned another $1.8 million, pushing its cumulative collection to an impressive $80 million.

Based on the novel Sea Anemone, the film revolves around a missing child whose disappearance gradually exposes disturbing secrets hidden inside a residential community.

Its combination of psychological suspense and social commentary has helped maintain audience interest weeks after release.

The weekend’s fifth position belonged to World War II drama Pressure, distributed by Studiocanal.

The film collected $500,000 during its second weekend, taking its overall Chinese earnings to $2.4 million.

Although modest compared to local productions, the film continues to attract history enthusiasts and mature audiences seeking serious wartime storytelling.

Despite several noteworthy releases, China’s overall theatrical business experienced another slowdown.

The country’s total weekend box office reached approximately $28.8 million, reflecting softer audience turnout compared to previous high-performing weekends.

Even more concerning for industry insiders is the year-to-date revenue figure.

China’s total 2026 box office currently stands at approximately $2.41 billion, representing a significant 41.8 percent decline compared to the same period in 2025.

The decline has sparked fresh conversations among producers and distributors regarding changing audience habits, increasing streaming competition, rising ticket prices and the need for stronger theatrical content capable of bringing moviegoers back into cinemas.

However, the success of The Furious provides hope that well-made action entertainers with emotional depth can still generate strong theatrical business.

The film’s performance also highlights the growing importance of martial arts cinema in China’s evolving commercial landscape, particularly when paired with socially relevant themes like child trafficking and corruption.

Meanwhile, Dear You’s historic run proves that emotionally driven local stories continue to possess enormous commercial power.

As more domestic productions compete against Hollywood imports, China’s film industry appears to be entering a new era where authentic local storytelling and culturally rooted narratives may become even more dominant.

The coming weeks will reveal whether The Furious can sustain its momentum and become China’s next mega blockbuster or whether fresh releases will reshape the box office yet again.

For now, China’s cinema battle remains as unpredictable—and as entertaining—as ever.
