Anne Carson Wins the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature and Jokes the Judges Are “Crazy”: The Genre-Bending Poet Who Put Marilyn Monroe in Troy

The Canadian poet, classicist and translator takes literature’s biggest prize. Here is why the wind-listening winner has Hollywood, theatre and bookshops buzzing.

STOCKHOLM: Anne Carson just won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and her first reaction was to tell the judges they were “crazy.” The Swedish Academy announced on Thursday, Oct. 8, that the 76-year-old Canadian poet, essayist and translator has been awarded the 2026 prize “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

The Phone Call From Stockholm

The Academy’s permanent secretary, Ingrid Carlberg, phoned Carson shortly before the public announcement. Carson was in Iceland at the time, and she had just enough time to say that she was listening to the wind. Carlberg said the writer was taken by surprise but very happy, and that she could hear it in her voice.

Carson later told Icelandic broadcaster RUV that she thinks the judges are all crazy, adding that it’s all rather crazy. It’s exactly the sort of dry, playful reaction her readers would expect.

Who Is Anne Carson?

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson lives in Michigan and has held Icelandic citizenship since 2022. She has worked as a professor of classics for more than three decades, and her writing draws heavily on Greek literature. But nobody would call her a stuffy academic. Her work refuses to stay in one box, hopping between poetry, fiction, essays, translation, opera and performance.

Her notable books include The Glass Essay, Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse, Nox, Float and The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos. Her long essay Eros the Bittersweet (1986) laid the foundation for much of her later work, and Autobiography of Red (1998) is often called her masterpiece.

She was also the first woman to win the T.S. Eliot Prize, in 2001.

The Nobel Committee’s Verdict

Anders Olsson, chair of the Nobel committee for literature, praised Carson for breaking away from lyrical poetry tied to the narrative self and for inspiring new forms of contemporary writing. He said her style leads to playful, ironic works that move between classical and modern poetry and across genres and art forms. He also pointed to her collaborations with visual artists, choreographers, and opera and theatre directors as proof of the freedom with which she treats literary rules.

The Fun, Gossipy Side of Carson

This is where it gets entertaining for a showbiz audience. Carson’s work has repeatedly crossed over into the performing arts:

  • Norma Jeane Baker of Troy (2019): A performance piece that drew a line between Helen of Troy and Marilyn Monroe, two of history’s most famous beauties.
  • The Trojan Women: A Comic (2021): A graphic retelling of Euripides’ ancient tragedy.
  • Elektra: Her translation of Sophocles’ play was staged in London last year, starring Brie Larson.

In other words, she is a Nobel winner whose work has appeared on stage with a Hollywood Oscar winner. It’s a rare mix of ancient Greek drama and modern celebrity culture.

Canada Celebrates

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the win an extraordinary achievement and a proud moment for Canada. He praised her wit, imagination and unique style, and said she had brought ancient stories to new audiences and changed how we think about literature.

The Numbers Behind the Prize

The Nobel Prize in Literature is considered the most prestigious award in world literature and carries a prize of 12 million Swedish kronor, about $1.2 million. Carson becomes only the 19th woman to win it. Last year’s winner was Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai. The official award ceremony will take place in Stockholm on Dec. 10.

What the Win Means

For readers and bookshops: A Nobel win almost always triggers a rush to bookstores. Expect Carson’s books, especially Autobiography of Red, to climb bestseller lists and sell out in some places. Publishers will likely rush to reprint her older titles.

For theatre and film: Her stage-friendly style could attract new adaptations. After the success of Elektra in London, producers may now see even more potential in her translations and performance pieces. A Nobel title also adds marketing power to any project.

For classical literature: Carson has long argued that ancient stories still speak to modern life. Her win could encourage schools, theatres and publishers to give Greek and Roman works fresh attention.

For women writers: With only 19 women among the laureates, each new female winner keeps the conversation about representation going.

For Carson herself: She has long been a favourite of literary circles, but this makes her a household name worldwide. Whether she embraces the attention remains to be seen. Her relaxed, joking reaction suggests she’ll take it in stride. The Nobel season also brings lectures, interviews and Stockholm events, though plans haven’t been announced.

Where to Start Reading

If you’re curious but don’t know where to begin, Carson’s best-known entry points are Autobiography of Red for a novel in verse, Nox for a deeply personal, scrapbook-style book about her late brother, and The Glass Essay for a taste of her essay-poetry style. She is never boring, even when she is difficult.

The Bottom Line

Anne Carson spent decades blurring the lines between poetry, essays, translation and performance, and the world has finally handed her its highest literary honour. She greeted it with a joke, a laugh and the sound of the Icelandic wind. For a writer who plays with rules, that feels exactly right.
