Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Trailer Sparks Fan Frenzy and Flop Whispers: Can Netflix’s $280 Million Gamble Survive?

Rumours of a gloomy test screening and reshoots are swirling around Netflix’s biggest theatrical bet, but the source behind them is not exactly bulletproof.

Los Angeles, October 16, 2026

Hollywood loves a juicy rumour, and this one comes with a lion, a Barbie-sized reputation and a $280 million price tag. Three days after Greta Gerwig unveiled the first trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, the internet is split between wonder and worry. Fans are arguing over the trailer, and a set of unverified whispers about a gloomy internal screening is making the rounds. Here is everything we know, and what we don’t.

The Trailer: A World Being Born

Netflix released the first trailer on October 13. Gerwig also premiered it, along with behind-the-scenes footage, on an IMAX screen at the AMC Lincoln Center in New York, where she chatted with Stephen Colbert about her follow-up to Barbie. Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” scores the preview, and one line is already being quoted everywhere: “Have you ever seen a world born?”

Gerwig explained the pitch simply. Movies this size, she said, are usually about destruction, and she wanted to make one about creation. The trailer ends with Aslan the Lion singing Narnia into existence. That image is the heart of the story and the reason she fell in love with the book as a child.

The Cast and the Stakes

The film stars Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds and Daniel Craig, with Meryl Streep voicing Aslan. It adapts the sixth book in C.S. Lewis’s series, although chronologically it is the first story. Gerwig has said Lewis himself urged readers to start with this one. Netflix acquired the global rights to the Narnia books in 2018, and Gerwig wrote her first draft in 2020 and 2021 after approaching Netflix chief executive Ted Sarandos at a cocktail party.

The budget is reported at $280 million, making this one of the most ambitious films Netflix has ever made. This is also the follow-up to Barbie, which grossed $1.44 billion and earned a Best Picture nomination. When your previous film made that kind of money, every frame of the next one gets analysed.

A Rare Theatrical Gamble

Netflix is doing something it almost never does. The film was originally planned for Thanksgiving 2026, with a short IMAX run before a Netflix release on Christmas Day. Netflix then moved it to 2027 to give it a full global theatrical release. IMAX previews begin on February 10, 2027, and the wide release follows on February 12, with the Netflix debut on April 2, 2027.

Normally, Netflix limits theatrical runs to awards qualification or special events. A full wide release for a film this expensive is a dramatic reversal, and it means box-office numbers will be judged in public, in a way streaming views never are.

The Rumour Mill: “The Air Went Out of the Room”

Now the gossip. A set of unconfirmed claims, reportedly spread by industry commentator Jeff Sneider, says that after a first internal screening, the room went silent. One source supposedly said, “when the lights came up, the air went out of the room.” The same chatter alleges that Netflix then asked for reshoots, and compares the situation to A Wrinkle in Time, a famous big-budget fantasy that failed. Another claim says Gerwig tried to leave the project after Barbie but was kept on, and that she may not return for a sequel.

Before anyone panics, a few things matter. These claims are unverified and anonymous. Sneider is not known as the most reliable source in Hollywood. Reshoots, meanwhile, are routine on big studio films and do not by themselves mean disaster. And the release date was moved to make room for a bigger theatrical rollout, which is a vote of confidence in the film’s scale rather than a sign of panic. Netflix has not confirmed any of the rumours.

The Fan Factor

Narnia carries a huge, passionate fanbase. Many fans are already wary of how Gerwig’s take might change a beloved world, and some of that anger was already there after the pop-culture phenomenon of Barbie. Add a trailer scored by a rock classic instead of a traditional orchestral theme, and everyone suddenly has a hot take. That is the price of adapting a franchise that spans generations and geographies.

What This Means for Everyone Involved

For Greta Gerwig: This is her biggest test since Barbie. A hit would cement her as one of the few directors who can open a blockbuster with a personal vision. A flop would invite the “can she handle franchise filmmaking” question that follows every acclaimed indie voice who goes big.

For Netflix: The stakes are enormous. A $280 million budget and a rare wide theatrical release make this a statement about the company’s cinema ambitions. Strong box office would make Netflix a serious theatrical player. A stumble would strengthen the argument that streaming-first studios cannot sell tickets.

For the cast: With Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan, Emma Mackey, Ciarán Hinds and Meryl Streep attached, the film has top-tier talent. A good reception would raise the profile of everyone involved, particularly for Mackey, who anchors a major franchise launch.

For the Narnia franchise: Netflix holds the rights to the whole book series, so this film is a launchpad. Strong results mean more adaptations. Weak ones could slow the universe plans before they begin. The rumours about Gerwig not returning for a sequel are also unconfirmed, but they show how fast a single film’s fate can shape talk about the entire series.

For the rest of the industry: If a streamer’s expensive event film succeeds in theatres, expect more big-budget Netflix titles to get wide releases. If it fails, studios will cite it as proof that theatrical audiences are hard to win.

What Happens Next

The next few months will decide the story. More trailers, posters and promotional events are likely as February approaches, and early reactions from the IMAX previews will be an important signal. Until then, everything about internal screenings and reshoots remains rumour, and the only thing we know for sure is that the film is coming on February 10 and 12, 2027, and to Netflix on April 2.

The Bottom Line

Narnia is the kind of project that attracts both wonder and wild speculation. The trailer shows a director chasing awe instead of explosions, the cast is stacked, and the budget is enormous. The flop whispers come from a source with a patchy record, so treat them with caution. The only verdict that matters will come when the lion starts to sing in theatres.
