As The Royals gears up for Season 2, Radhikaraje Gaekwad calls out its “misleading portrayal” of India’s princely families.
Netflix’s royal drama The Royals, starring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, may have made a splash with its glamorous storyline, but not everyone’s rolling out the red carpet. Days after the platform teased Season 2, the Maharani of Baroda, Radhikaraje Gaekwad, publicly criticized the show for misrepresenting India’s royal families.
Taking to Instagram, the Maharani penned a powerful post titled “The Royal Ignore”, slamming the portrayal of royals in the show. “One would imagine the royals of India… would have a better chance of surviving an on-screen portrayal such as the one in The Royals,” she wrote, addressing how post-1947 royals were reduced to clichés despite their real-world contributions to politics, hospitality, education, and heritage conservation.
She praised the legacy of Indian royals—especially the women—for continuing to inspire through leadership and cultural preservation, even without formal titles or power. The Maharani also highlighted how the younger generation is carrying forward this legacy, breaking stereotypes.
Meanwhile, Netflix India’s Season 2 announcement—with a cryptic throne post—has fans buzzing, though reactions remain mixed.
Created by Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy, The Royals also stars Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, and Zeenat Aman. But looks like the real royalty just entered the chat.
