Rajinikanth-Nayanthara Reunite for Dharman After 5 Years! Kamal Haasan’s Film Gets a Star-Powered Boost Ahead of 2027 Release

Nayanthara joins Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Dharman, with a striking first-look poster teasing their reunion. But after multiple director changes, can Ashwath Marimuthu deliver one of Tamil cinema’s biggest theatrical spectacles?

Superstar Rajinikanth and Lady Superstar Nayanthara are back together—and their reunion is already creating a buzz among fans. The makers of Dharman have officially welcomed Nayanthara to the film with a dramatic poster featuring the two stars facing each other in a dark, corridor-like setting. The production house summed up the casting announcement with a confident message: “THE AURA IS DOUBLE.”

And honestly, the tagline knows exactly what it is selling: two of Tamil cinema’s biggest names sharing screen space again.

Nayanthara also responded to the announcement on X, writing, “OnToTheNext with One and Only Superstar.” Her message was short, but it was enough to set fans talking about their reunion, their on-screen chemistry and the mysterious role she might play in the film.

Produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International and directed by Ashwath Marimuthu, Dharman is expected to arrive in theatres in 2027. The official release date, however, remains unannounced.

Nayanthara and Rajinikanth: A Reunion Five Years in the Making

The last time Rajinikanth and Nayanthara shared the screen in a film was Annaatthe, released in 2021. Their reunion in Dharman brings back a combination that audiences have seen across several films over the years, including Chandramukhi, Kuselan and Darbar.

That familiarity is a major advantage for the upcoming project. Rajinikanth commands an enormous fan following, while Nayanthara has established herself as one of the most prominent female stars in South Indian cinema. Bringing them together again gives the film an additional promotional hook before the makers have revealed much about its story.

But there is one big question: how substantial will Nayanthara’s role actually be?

The newly unveiled poster confirms her presence in the film, but it does not reveal her character’s name, motivations or relationship with Rajinikanth’s character. The makers have also not clarified whether she will have a full-fledged lead role or a more limited appearance.

For fans, the mystery is part of the excitement. For the filmmakers, however, expectations will need to be matched by the eventual screenplay. A major casting announcement can generate enormous attention, but audiences will ultimately want to see Nayanthara contribute meaningfully to the narrative rather than merely appear in promotional material.

Dharman’s Director Changes: Four Names Before Ashwath Marimuthu

While Nayanthara’s arrival has brought fresh excitement, Dharman has already experienced an unusually eventful development journey.

Rajinikanth previously revealed that Ashwath Marimuthu was the fourth director announced for the project. The superstar explained that the film had initially been planned with Ravikumar, but the collaboration did not materialise. Sundar C was then brought on board before stepping away because of delays involving his other commitments.

The team subsequently considered Cibi Chakravarthi, whose proposed story explored a sensitive subject involving a nuclear scientist and nuclear weapons. According to Rajinikanth, the story was interesting but would have required extensive planning and filming in locations including Afghanistan and Russia.

The project was eventually postponed in that form, and Ashwath Marimuthu became the director.

These changes naturally raise questions about the film’s development, but they do not automatically indicate trouble. Films involving major stars can evolve significantly as scripts, schedules, budgets and creative priorities change.

What matters now is whether the final version of Dharman has a clear creative vision. With Ashwath Marimuthu leading the project, audiences will be watching to see how the filmmaker balances his storytelling approach with Rajinikanth’s larger-than-life screen persona.

What Is Dharman About? The First Look Offers a Dark Clue

The makers have kept the full storyline under wraps, but an earlier first-look poster offered a striking glimpse of Rajinikanth’s character.

The superstar appeared in surgical scrubs, holding a bloodied scalpel inside an operating theatre. The imagery suggested a darker setting than a conventional family entertainer, while promotional material associated with the film described the character as “The Deadly Doctor.”

That visual immediately created room for speculation. Is Rajinikanth playing a doctor with a dangerous secret? Is the character a morally complicated protagonist? Or is the medical setting part of a larger thriller plot?

At this stage, the makers have not confirmed those theories, and the poster alone cannot establish the film’s storyline.

However, the imagery does suggest that Dharman could combine suspense and action with the star-driven entertainment that audiences expect from Rajinikanth.

Ashwath Marimuthu, known for Oh My Kadavule and Dragon, now has the task of shaping that material into a film that feels fresh while still giving Rajinikanth the moments his fans eagerly anticipate.

Simran and Raashii Khanna Add to the Cast

Nayanthara is not the only familiar face attached to the project. The film also features Simran and Raashii Khanna in supporting roles.

Simran’s presence adds another layer of interest, particularly given her previous collaboration with Rajinikanth in Petta. Raashii Khanna, meanwhile, brings a different audience following and further strengthens the film’s ensemble.

The challenge for the makers will be ensuring that the cast serves the story rather than allowing the film to become a collection of star appearances. A strong ensemble can make a commercial entertainer more engaging, but each character needs a meaningful place in the narrative.

Details about the individual roles remain limited, leaving fans to wait for further casting announcements and character reveals.

Kamal Haasan’s Production Raises Expectations

Another major attraction is the involvement of Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International.

The combination of Rajinikanth as the lead star and Kamal Haasan backing the project has given Dharman additional industry visibility. Both actors have enormous legacies in Indian cinema, and their association with the film makes it a particularly watched project.

The production house will also need to manage the practical demands of a film with such high expectations. Scheduling a superstar, coordinating an ensemble cast and delivering a technically polished theatrical experience require careful planning.

The director changes make consistency especially important. With the project now moving forward under Ashwath Marimuthu, the production must maintain momentum while ensuring that the script, performances and technical departments work towards a unified vision.

The latest casting announcement suggests that the makers are continuing to build anticipation around the film.

Will Dharman Be a 2027 Box-Office Biggie?

With a 2027 theatrical release expected, Dharman has time to build a substantial promotional campaign. Nayanthara’s addition gives the team a fresh reason to generate conversation, while Rajinikanth’s character reveal has already provided a glimpse of the film’s potentially darker tone.

The commercial prospects will ultimately depend on several factors: the strength of the story, the scale of the action, the music, the trailer and how effectively the film distinguishes itself from other major releases.

Rajinikanth’s star power is an obvious advantage, but it cannot replace a compelling screenplay. Likewise, Nayanthara’s popularity will help attract attention, although the impact of her role will depend on how the character is written.

For now, the film has three major ingredients working in its favour: a superstar-led premise, an intriguing visual identity and a reunion that fans have been waiting five years to see.

The makers have yet to confirm an official release date, so speculation about a specific festival or holiday release should be treated cautiously.

Nayanthara’s Next Stop: Mookuthi Amman 2

Before Dharman reaches theatres, Nayanthara is expected to return as the goddess in Mookuthi Amman 2, scheduled for release on November 6, 2026.

The film gives her another prominent project ahead of the anticipated Rajinikanth reunion. Its release could also keep the actress in the entertainment headlines as audiences look forward to her next appearance on screen.

With Mookuthi Amman 2 approaching and Dharman developing its ensemble, Nayanthara has two very different projects on the horizon—one rooted in devotional fantasy and the other carrying the intrigue of a Rajinikanth-led commercial thriller.

The Verdict: The Aura Is Double, but the Expectations Are Higher

Nayanthara’s entry into Dharman has delivered precisely the kind of casting update that gets fans talking. The reunion with Rajinikanth brings nostalgia, star power and considerable promotional value to a film that has already attracted attention because of its changing directorial lineup and mysterious premise.

Now comes the difficult part: turning that excitement into a satisfying theatrical experience.

Can Ashwath Marimuthu give Rajinikanth a memorable new character? Will Nayanthara receive a role worthy of her stature? And will Kamal Haasan’s production deliver a film that lives up to the anticipation?

Those answers remain under wraps. But with the two stars facing each other in that striking poster, Dharman has certainly given fans a reason to keep watching.

Note: For optimal viewing on mobile devices, rotate the screen.
