Salman Khan Breaks Silence on Maatrubhumi Controversy! Calls Government Pressure Reports ‘Bakwas’, Reveals Film’s Real Story

At the trailer launch of his much-delayed war drama, Salman dismissed claims that the makers were forced to remove anti-China content. The film, originally titled Battle of Galwan, will now hit cinemas on December 4, while its original creative collaborators have officially stepped away.

Mumbai: Salman Khan has finally addressed the controversy surrounding his upcoming war drama Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, and he has done it in his trademark no-nonsense style. At the film’s trailer launch on November 6, the Bollywood superstar strongly dismissed reports claiming that the makers were pressured by the government to remove anti-China content or rewrite the script.

Calling the entire narrative “nonsense” and “bakwaas”, Salman insisted that the film is not designed to portray one country as a villain. Instead, he described it as a story about soldiers from two countries caught in difficult circumstances, where duty towards their respective nations comes before everything else.

“The story is about soldiers, soldiers of two countries. There’s no negative force in the story. Actually, the situation is negative. But it’s like nation comes first for the soldiers. They are caught in a situation and both the sides are trying to solve this,” Salman explained at the event.

And just when the conversation became serious, the actor added a cheeky remark about director Apoorva Lakhia having an “old version” of the film. The comment immediately drew attention because the project has undergone a significant evolution since it was first announced as Battle of Galwan.

Salman Khan Calls Government Pressure Reports ‘Bakwas’

For months, speculation surrounding Maatrubhumi has kept the film in the headlines. Since the project was originally inspired by the 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley, reports suggested that its subject could become politically sensitive amid improving diplomatic relations between the two countries.

There were claims that the authorities wanted changes to the film’s portrayal of China, leading to speculation that the original script had been altered under government pressure.

Salman has now directly rejected that version of events.

“This ongoing narrative that we were making a film against China and that our government has pressured us to change the script or rewrite it, it’s all nonsense. It’s not true at all,” he said.

The actor also clarified that Maatrubhumi is not a biopic. According to him, the intention was to create a film centred on a direct confrontation between soldiers, rather than make a conventional political statement.

“This is not a biopic. This is inspired,” Salman said, explaining that he wanted to explore a man-on-man confrontation involving Indian and Chinese soldiers.

He also questioned the suggestion that a film could damage diplomatic relations simply because it depicts a military conflict. His argument was that the story should be viewed as a human drama about soldiers and their circumstances, rather than as an attempt to provoke hostility between nations.

From Battle of Galwan to Maatrubhumi: What Changed?

The film’s journey has been anything but straightforward. Initially announced as Battle of Galwan, the project drew attention because it was inspired by the June 2020 confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh.

The clash resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and became one of the most serious military flashpoints between the two countries in recent years. The film was expected to bring that emotionally charged chapter of modern Indian history to the big screen, with Salman portraying an army officer associated with the Galwan operation.

However, the project gradually evolved into Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace. The change in title and the reported development of a new version fuelled questions about how closely the final film would follow the original incident.

Salman’s latest explanation suggests that the makers want audiences to focus on the experiences of soldiers on both sides, their families and the difficult choices that come with military duty.

That approach could give the film a broader emotional appeal. Instead of relying entirely on patriotic action sequences, the makers appear keen to explore the human cost of conflict. The challenge, however, will be balancing that emotional storytelling with the expectations of audiences who have followed the film since its Battle of Galwan announcement.

Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh Exit the Film

Adding another unexpected twist to the Maatrubhumi story, defence journalists Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh have officially ended their association with the project.

The duo was credited with the original idea behind the film, which was connected to an account featured in their book India’s Most Fearless 3. Their involvement initially linked the film to a real-life military narrative and gave the project a strong foundation in reported accounts of Indian soldiers.

In a statement announcing their departure, Aroor and Singh explained that the film had evolved beyond the Galwan incident account that originally brought them on board.

“As the film has evolved, it has moved beyond the account of the Galwan incident in our India’s Most Fearless series that first brought us on board,” they said.

The journalists also expressed gratitude towards Salman, director Apoorva Lakhia and the rest of the team, wishing the film success.

Their exit does not automatically indicate a disagreement or controversy between the parties. In fact, their statement was respectful and appreciative. However, it does underline how significantly the project has changed from its original conception.

For the filmmakers, this means the final version will increasingly be judged on its own storytelling choices rather than simply as a screen adaptation of the original book account. For audiences, the obvious question remains: how much of the original Galwan narrative will survive in the film?

Chitrangda Singh and Salman’s Emotional War Drama

Directed by Apoorva Lakhia and produced by Salman Khan, Maatrubhumi also features Chitrangda Singh in a crucial role, alongside actors including Mukesh Rishi, Ankur Bhatia, Zeyn Shaw and others.

Chitrangda’s presence adds an important emotional dimension to a film that is being positioned around soldiers and their families. The story’s focus on the people affected by military conflict could allow the actress to play a significant part in balancing the action with personal drama.

The film’s subject also gives Salman an opportunity to step into a different kind of patriotic drama. While the actor has previously appeared in films with military and nationalistic themes, Maatrubhumi carries the additional weight of being inspired by a recent and sensitive real-world confrontation.

The success of the film will depend not just on its action sequences, but also on whether audiences connect with its emotional core.

Maatrubhumi Release Date: Salman Khan Announces December 4

After months of uncertainty, title changes and release-date speculation, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace is now scheduled to arrive in theatres on December 4, 2026.

The trailer launch has finally given the film a clearer promotional direction. With Salman personally addressing the controversy, the makers appear keen to shift the conversation away from rumours and towards the film’s actual content.

The release date also gives the team a fresh opportunity to build anticipation through music, promotional appearances and audience reactions to the trailer.

Interestingly, Salman also announced a special initiative at the launch: viewers above the age of 75 will be able to watch the film for just ₹11, adding a distinctive promotional touch to the campaign.

Can Maatrubhumi Win Over Audiences After So Much Speculation?

There is no denying that Maatrubhumi has already generated considerable curiosity. Its original Galwan connection, subsequent title change, reported script evolution, departure of the original creative collaborators and repeated release uncertainty have all kept it in the news.

But now the real test begins.

Salman’s clarification may help put an end to speculation about government pressure, but it also raises expectations about what the final film actually delivers. Viewers will want to see whether the story successfully balances patriotism, military action and the human consequences of conflict.

The film could also attract audiences who are interested in stories inspired by real events, particularly those involving the Indian armed forces. However, because it is not being presented as a biopic, the makers will need to communicate clearly where the film takes creative liberties.

For Salman, Maatrubhumi is more than another theatrical release. It is a project carrying a sensitive subject, a long promotional backstory and considerable public curiosity.

With December 4 now set as the target, the spotlight is firmly on the trailer and the film itself. One thing is certain: Salman has made his position clear. He says Maatrubhumi is not about creating hostility between countries. It is about soldiers, their families and the difficult circumstances in which duty comes first.

Whether audiences embrace this new vision will be decided when the film finally reaches cinemas.
