Biggest overseas minimum guarantee ever for an Indian film, a Rs 475 crore break-even target and a Christmas clash with Hollywood giants: SRK’s King is playing for the crown.
MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan hasn’t even stepped into theatres yet, and King is already rewriting the record books. The Siddharth Anand directorial has reportedly sold its overseas rights to Phars Films for a minimum guarantee (MG) of Rs 175 crore, a number that has the trade world doing mental maths and double-checking the zeros.

The Record: Rs 175 Crore and Counting
Previous Indian films have not even fetched an overseas MG of Rs 100 crore, so King‘s figure puts a big gap between it and the rest. In plain words, Phars has agreed to pay the makers Rs 175 crore upfront, whether or not the film earns it back. That is a huge show of confidence from a distributor.

What Changed From the YRF Plan?
Shah Rukh’s films have usually been distributed overseas by Yash Raj Films, and King was earlier set to follow that path. Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures had joined hands with YRF for the international distribution of the film. That arrangement followed the standard commission model, where the distributor charges a fee and doesn’t pay any guarantee.
The new deal flips the script. Under an MG model, the risk shifts from the makers to the distributor. For the producers, that means money in the bank before the first ticket is sold.
How Phars Will Play the Game
Phars is expected to follow its own strategy. It will sell individual markets such as Germany and North America to sub-distributors, while handling the Middle East, where the company is based, directly.
Many territory distributors are expected to remain the same as they would have been under YRF. The biggest changes will be in North America, the United Kingdom and the Middle East, where YRF typically released films through its own offices.
The Big Question: Can King Earn It Back?
Here is where the numbers get serious. Since Phars is expected to sell certain markets at a premium, King will have to earn a lot to break even. Pinkvilla reports that the film may need to collect around $50 million overseas, roughly Rs 475 crore.
That is a steep target. Pathaan and Jawan each earned around Rs 400 crore overseas, so King has to beat the best of Shah Rukh’s own earlier performances by a clear margin, in a market where audiences are loyal but not unlimited.
A Deal Surrounded by Big Numbers
The overseas record is only one piece of a very expensive puzzle. Pen Marudhar reportedly acquired the all-India distribution rights for Rs 250 crore, beating bids from companies including A.A. Films, Jio Studios (Distribution), PVR INOX Pictures, Yash Raj Films (Distribution) and Dharma Productions (Distribution). The film is reportedly made on a budget of around Rs 400 crore.
Add the music rights, which were reportedly on the verge of closing at about Rs 50 crore for a single film, according to Bollywood Hungama via a trade source. The business side of King is shaping up as one of the biggest in Indian cinema.
The Competition: Avengers and Dune Come Calling
King faces stiff competition. Hollywood heavyweights like Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are expected to share the festive season, and they will fight for the same screens, particularly premium formats in overseas markets. A Rs 475 crore break-even target gets harder when big-budget Hollywood spectacles are also asking for the same audiences.
The Star Power Behind the Hype
King brings Shah Rukh Khan together with director Siddharth Anand for the second time after Pathaan, which collected over Rs 1000 crore worldwide. The cast is a who’s who of Hindi cinema: Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Arshad Warsi, Anil Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat and Raghav Juyal. The film arrives in theatres on December 24.
What This Means for Shah Rukh Khan and the Makers
1. Safety net, big pressure. The makers get a major guaranteed payment before release. That reduces financial risk, but it also puts a spotlight on the opening weekend.
2. A new benchmark. If the deal holds, Rs 175 crore becomes the figure future superstar films will be measured against in overseas negotiations. Other stars’ teams will quote it in every future meeting.
3. The “king of overseas” crown. Shah Rukh’s overseas appeal has been a pillar of his comeback. If King delivers, it strengthens the argument that Hindi cinema’s biggest global draw is still him.
What Happens Next
(This is our analysis, not confirmed fact.)
- Aggressive marketing. With this much money on the table, expect a big international promotional push, including trailers, premiere events and fan screenings across the US, UK and Gulf.
- Premium pricing and format play. Phars selling markets at a premium suggests that distributors will push IMAX and large-format screens to boost per-ticket revenue.
- Advance booking buzz. Early ticket sales will become the first test. Strong numbers could ease concerns about the Rs 475 crore target, while a slow start could raise questions.
- Rival releases adjusting dates. Other films may rethink their schedules to avoid direct clashes in the opening week.
The Bottom Line
Rs 175 crore is not just a number. It is a bet that Shah Rukh Khan can once again turn a festival release into a global event. If King clears the bar, it could redefine what an Indian film is worth overseas. If it falls short, the risk lands on Phars’s desk, not the makers’.
Either way, the cameras are ready, the screens are booked and the countdown to December 24 has officially begun. The King’s crown is heavy, and the whole trade is watching to see if he can wear it.
