Varun Dhawan’s ‘Dhurandhar’ Comment Sparks Ranveer Singh Fan War; Was Aditya Dhar the Real Hero Behind the Blockbuster Franchise?

Varun Dhawan calls Dhurandhar a “director’s win,” fans accuse him of undermining Ranveer Singh as debate over the franchise’s massive box office success explodes online.

Bollywood is no stranger to ego clashes, subtle digs and fan wars, but this time, a seemingly harmless comment by Varun Dhawan has triggered a full-fledged social media storm around one of Hindi cinema’s biggest action franchises — Dhurandhar. What began as a casual conversation between Varun and his father David Dhawan has now turned into a heated debate about who truly deserves credit for the mega success of Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar: The Revenge — director Aditya Dhar or superstar Ranveer Singh.

And honestly, the internet is divided.

The controversy erupted after Varun Dhawan appeared in a candid interview segment with veteran filmmaker David Dhawan. During the discussion, the father-son duo spoke about how modern Bollywood measures success, box office collections and the role actors and directors play in making films blockbuster hits.

David Dhawan initially maintained that stars still drive films in India, saying, “Actors have a bigger role in it.” But Varun interrupted with a surprising example. Referring to Dhurandhar, he said audiences noticed “someone like Aditya Dhar and the way he made the film,” indirectly implying that the franchise’s success leaned more towards the filmmaker’s vision than the lead actor’s stardom.

That single remark was enough to set Ranveer Singh’s fandom on fire.

Within minutes, social media platforms were flooded with reactions accusing Varun of trying to downplay Ranveer Singh’s contribution to the franchise. Fans argued that while Aditya Dhar’s direction was undoubtedly top-notch, Dhurandhar would never have become the phenomenon it is today without Ranveer’s ferocious screen presence, physical transformation and emotionally explosive performance.

One viral post summed up the anger perfectly: “If Dhurandhar had flopped, everyone would have blamed Ranveer. But when it became an all-time blockbuster, suddenly it’s only the director’s win?”

And that question is actually at the heart of Bollywood’s oldest debate — when a film works, who gets the crown?

The Dhurandhar franchise changed the game for everyone involved. For Aditya Dhar, it cemented his reputation as one of the sharpest commercial filmmakers in the country after previously proving his talent with patriotic action dramas. But for Ranveer Singh, the films became something even more important — redemption.

Before Dhurandhar, Ranveer had quietly begun slipping into dangerous territory commercially. A string of underperformers and experimental films had created whispers inside the industry about whether the actor’s box office power was fading. Trade analysts had started questioning his ability to open films consistently, while social media trolls mocked his eccentric public persona more than his acting.

Then came Dhurandhar.

The first film exploded at the box office and surprised even trade insiders with its phenomenal theatrical run. Packed with gritty action, stylised violence, emotional intensity and political drama, the film became a mass-market juggernaut. But more importantly, audiences embraced Ranveer Singh in a way they hadn’t in years.

His transformation into the rugged, morally conflicted protagonist was praised across the board. Fans loved the aggression, critics applauded the restraint, and single-screen audiences finally connected with him on a larger-than-life level again.

If the first film revived Ranveer’s box office credibility, Dhurandhar: The Revenge turned him into an unstoppable force.

Despite criticism about plot holes, over-the-top storytelling and uneven pacing, the sequel shattered records and became an All-Time Blockbuster. And interestingly, even many neutral viewers admitted that Ranveer Singh’s performance carried the emotional weight of the sequel.

That’s exactly why Varun Dhawan’s statement became controversial.

Many fans interpreted it as an indirect attempt to minimise Ranveer’s contribution to the franchise. Social media users even accused Varun of being insecure about Ranveer’s dominance in the current generation of Bollywood stars.

One fan brutally wrote, “Varun can never pull off what Ranveer did in Dhurandhar. Not even close.”

Another user added, “The first film may have been Aditya Dhar’s victory, but the sequel became historic because Ranveer elevated weak writing with sheer acting brilliance.”

However, not everyone agreed with the outrage.

A section of film lovers defended Varun Dhawan, saying he was simply appreciating Aditya Dhar’s filmmaking craft and not insulting Ranveer Singh. After all, Dhar’s storytelling, visual style and command over action played a massive role in building the Dhurandhar universe.

And truthfully, both arguments have merit.

In today’s Bollywood landscape, franchises rarely become successful purely because of stars or purely because of directors. The audience has evolved. Viewers now demand both spectacle and substance. Dhurandhar worked because Aditya Dhar delivered a compelling cinematic world while Ranveer Singh injected it with raw emotional energy.

Without Dhar’s vision, the films may not have looked this grand. Without Ranveer’s intensity, they may not have felt this powerful.

Trade experts also believe the timing of Varun’s comments made the situation worse because Bollywood is currently going through a phase where actors are extremely sensitive about credit-sharing. The rise of director-driven cinema, streaming platforms and pan-India storytelling has reduced the monopoly superstars once enjoyed.

Today, filmmakers like Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Lokesh Kanagaraj, Atlee and Aditya Dhar command fandoms almost as intense as actors themselves. Audiences buy tickets for directors now — something that was once rare in mainstream Hindi cinema.

That changing power balance is exactly why conversations like these spark such strong reactions online.

Interestingly, insiders claim the Dhurandhar team itself isn’t bothered by the controversy. Both Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar reportedly share tremendous mutual respect and understand that the franchise became successful because of collaborative effort.

Still, the online debate has opened up bigger industry questions.

Can Bollywood still produce massive blockbusters without superstar charisma? Are directors becoming bigger brands than actors? And perhaps most importantly — are actors secretly uncomfortable with losing creative dominance?

The Dhurandhar controversy may eventually die down, but it highlights a fascinating shift happening inside the Hindi film industry. Audiences are no longer blindly worshipping stars alone. They are analysing writing, direction, performances and filmmaking quality more closely than ever before.

And in many ways, that evolution could actually benefit Bollywood in the long run.

For Ranveer Singh, however, one thing is crystal clear — Dhurandhar gave him exactly what he desperately needed: a career-defining blockbuster franchise that reminded everyone why he remains one of the most explosive performers of his generation.

Meanwhile, for Aditya Dhar, the franchise has officially elevated him into Bollywood’s elite league of commercial filmmakers.

So who deserves more credit?

The internet may keep fighting over it for weeks, but the box office has already delivered its verdict: Dhurandhar became unstoppable because both the actor and director brought their A-game — and Bollywood desperately needed that combination.
