Vijay Sethupathi Makes History! Becomes First Indian Actor to Present at 54th International Emmy Awards, Hollywood Eyes Maharaja Remake

The Tamil superstar is taking Indian talent to the global stage as he gears up for the November 23 ceremony in New York. With Mani Ratnam’s Inji Vellam and a potential Hollywood remake of Maharaja also in the spotlight, Vijay’s international journey is getting bigger by the day.

New Delhi: Vijay Sethupathi is all set to add a major international milestone to his already impressive career. The celebrated Tamil actor has been selected as one of the presenters at the 54th International Emmy Awards, scheduled to take place in New York on November 23, 2026. And this is no ordinary invitation: he is set to become the first Indian actor to present an award at the prestigious International Emmy ceremony.

For an actor who has built his reputation by choosing unconventional characters and letting his performances do the talking, the recognition is particularly significant. Vijay has never followed the traditional superstar playbook. Instead of relying on a predictable image, he has moved comfortably between commercial entertainers, intense thrillers, independent films and character-driven dramas. Now, that distinctive career is taking him to one of the most recognised international television award platforms.

The development is also a proud moment for Indian entertainment. While Indian actors and creators have appeared at several major international award ceremonies, Vijay’s upcoming appearance marks a first for an Indian actor at the International Emmys.

Vijay Sethupathi’s International Emmy Appearance: Why It Matters

The International Emmy Awards celebrate excellence in television programming produced outside the United States. The 54th edition will bring together television professionals, performers, producers and industry leaders from across the world in New York.

Vijay’s selection as a presenter puts an Indian film star in front of an international gathering that celebrates storytelling across languages and borders. It also highlights the growing visibility of Indian performers beyond the conventional Bollywood spotlight.

The distinction is worth noting because the International Emmy Awards and the Primetime Emmy Awards are two different ceremonies. Priyanka Chopra presented an award alongside Tom Hiddleston at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles in 2016. Vijay’s upcoming appearance, however, is at the International Emmy Awards, making his achievement a separate milestone.

Behind the development is Kavita Gupta, a producer and board member of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the organisation responsible for the International Emmy Awards. Gupta has played an important role in bringing Indian talent to the global platform.

She was also instrumental in Vir Das hosting the 2024 International Emmy Awards. Das had won an International Emmy in 2023 for his comedy special Vir Das: Landing. His hosting opportunity further strengthened India’s presence at the ceremony, and Vijay’s selection continues that momentum.

India Has More Reasons to Watch the 2026 International Emmys

Vijay Sethupathi will not be the only reason for Indian audiences to keep an eye on this year’s ceremony. India also has representation among the nominees.

Real Kashmir Football Club has been nominated in the Best Drama Series category, while Vir Das’ Vir Das: Fool Volume is competing for Best Comedy Series. The nominations demonstrate the range of Indian storytelling, from sports-based drama to stand-up comedy.

This growing international recognition matters because it can help Indian productions attract attention from global distributors, streaming platforms and production companies. A strong showing at the International Emmys could also encourage more collaborations between Indian creators and international studios.

For Vijay, the presenter role offers a different kind of visibility. It is not a conventional acting award nomination, but it places him in a position to represent Indian entertainment at a major global event. His appearance could also introduce his work to viewers who may not yet be familiar with his filmography.

From Baththa to Mani Ratnam’s Inji Vellam: What’s Next for Vijay?

On the professional front, Vijay was recently seen in Baththa, directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan. Set in Madras in 1986, the film revolves around a feared gangster whose life takes an unexpected turn after an eight-year-old boy accidentally locks him inside an empty school toilet.

What begins as an unusual predicament gradually becomes an emotional journey. As the gangster and the child spend time together, an unlikely bond develops. The boy’s innocence challenges the hardened man’s outlook, bringing out a softer side that he has kept hidden.

The premise offers Vijay another opportunity to explore a character beyond the familiar gangster stereotype. Rather than relying entirely on violence or swagger, the story uses an unexpected relationship to examine transformation, vulnerability and human connection.

His next major attraction is Inji Vellam, the much-awaited project directed by Mani Ratnam and co-starring Sai Pallavi. The film’s title and first-look material have already generated curiosity among fans. The project is expected to be a romantic drama, although the makers have kept much of the storyline under wraps.

The collaboration is particularly interesting because Vijay and Mani Ratnam previously worked together on Chekka Chivantha Vaanam in 2018. Their reunion, now with Sai Pallavi joining the cast, has created considerable anticipation.

With AR Rahman composing the music, the film also brings together a creative team with a strong track record. Inji Vellam is expected to arrive in January 2027, although audiences will be watching for further official announcements about its release and promotional campaign.

For Vijay, the project could provide another opportunity to reach audiences beyond the Tamil-speaking market. Mani Ratnam’s films have traditionally attracted attention across Indian cinema, while Sai Pallavi’s popularity adds another layer of appeal.

Maharaja Hollywood Remake: Is Matthew McConaughey in the Picture?

If the International Emmy announcement was not enough, Vijay’s Maharaja is also making headlines for a potential Hollywood connection.

The 2024 Tamil thriller, directed by Nithilan Saminathan, received considerable attention for its gripping narrative and unexpected turns. The film’s success travelled beyond India, particularly after its strong performance in China. It reportedly collected around ₹91.65 crore at the Chinese box office, according to figures cited in the original report.

Producer Sudhan Sundaram has confirmed that a Hollywood agency approached the makers for the remake rights following the film’s success. The agency is reportedly working to put the project together and is looking to bring an A-list actor on board.

The possibility has naturally triggered speculation about the Hollywood casting. Matthew McConaughey’s name has surfaced in online discussions, but there is no official confirmation that the Oscar-winning actor is attached to the project.

Sudhan has indicated that McConaughey could be among the actors being discussed, while making it clear that the agency is the one that can confirm the casting and studio details. In other words, the rumour mill may be running, but the makers have not announced a final cast.

There is another interesting development. Vijay himself has expressed his willingness to be part of the Hollywood remake, even saying he would do it without charging a fee. The actor’s enthusiasm underlines his attachment to the story and its international potential.

The remake could give Maharaja a fresh identity for a global audience, but adapting a film known for its tightly constructed narrative will be a challenge. The emotional core, suspense and carefully placed revelations that made the original memorable will need to translate effectively into a different cultural setting.

If the project moves forward with a major Hollywood star, it could also bring renewed international attention to the original Tamil film and its creators.

A Global Chapter Begins for Vijay Sethupathi

Vijay Sethupathi’s upcoming International Emmy appearance arrives at an interesting point in his career. He has a major collaboration with Mani Ratnam lined up, a potential Hollywood remake connected to one of his most talked-about films, and a growing international profile.

The November 23 ceremony could become another defining moment, not because he is collecting a trophy for a performance, but because he is stepping onto the stage as a representative of Indian acting talent.

His journey also reflects a larger shift in the entertainment industry. Indian stories and performers are increasingly finding audiences across borders, while international platforms are showing greater interest in regional cinema and its creators.

For Vijay, the biggest win may be the opportunity to take that journey further. And with Inji Vellam, the Maharaja remake buzz and the International Emmys all drawing attention, the actor’s next chapter looks anything but ordinary.
