Karan Johar Blasts Bollywood’s Copycat Culture: “My Universe Is Cinema, Not a Spy Franchise!”

The Dharma brag calls out crowd mentality in Hindi cinema, takes a cheeky swipe at trends post-Pushpa & Stree, and gears up for The Traitors on Prime Video.

Karan Johar has never been one to mince words, and this time, he’s taken aim really straight at Bollywood’s growing obsession with “universes” and trend-hopping. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, the filmmaker slammed the crowd outlook gripping the manufacture post-Pushpa 2, Stree 2, and Chhaava, calling it creatively lazy.

“Pushpa worked, so now everyone wants to go ‘massy’. Stree clicks? Suddenly horror-comedies are back! But where’s the originality?” KJo asked, clearly unimpressed. He added, “Someone latterly asked me if I have a macrocosm. I said, ‘My universe is cinema itself!’”

Known for his flair, Johar is now switching gears from the director’s chair to hosting The Traitors, a psychological realness really present premiering June 12 on Prime Video. With a spicy contestant heel that includes Uorfi Javed, Karan Kundrra, Raj Kundra, Raftaar, and Maheep Kapoor, KJo promises drama and deceit galore.

Looks so same Karan’s ready to shift the pot—both on-screen and off. Bollywood, read notes: originality is endorse in fashion.
