The producer says she finally has a story worth telling, but the lead, cast and release date are still under wraps.
MUMBAI: Bollywood’s most daring biopic is getting a second act. Producer Ektaa Kapoor has confirmed that The Dirty Picture 2 is in the works, nearly 15 years after Vidya Balan’s career-defining turn as Silk Smitha lit up the big screen.

What Ektaa Kapoor Said
Ektaa made the announcement during a conversation on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast. She called it one of the very big films she is currently making and said she is planning it after 15 years. According to her, she had been thinking about a sequel for years but only wanted to go ahead once she found a story that deserved to be told.

She also shared her thoughts on the original film. In her view, The Dirty Picture told the story of a woman who was condemned for standing up for her sexuality. But for her, sexuality is now about choice, and she never saw Silk Smitha as a victim. She saw someone who celebrated her sexuality, and she believes that’s one reason the film connected so strongly with audiences.
The sequel will also revolve around a real person’s story, Ektaa said, but she did not reveal who. Reports add that the cast, director and release date are still secret, and that a larger announcement will follow.
A Quick Look Back at the Original
The Dirty Picture released on Dec. 2, 2011, the anniversary of Silk Smitha’s birth. Directed by Milan Luthria and written by Rajat Aroraa, it was produced by Ektaa Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, and starred Vidya Balan with Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor.
The film was inspired by the life of Silk Smitha, the South Indian actress who appeared in more than 450 films during an 18-year career and died at just 35. It was a box office hit, reportedly earning around Rs 117 crore, and a critical triumph. Vidya won the National Film Award for Best Actress, and the film picked up three Filmfare Awards, including Best Actress for Balan.
Vidya once said that being part of the film was itself the biggest award, and that she was grateful for the love the team received.
Why the Sequel Is Such a Big Deal
The original is remembered for fearless storytelling. It tackled fame, desire, ambition and double standards in the film industry, and it did so in a way that was bold, funny and heartbreaking. Following that is a tall order.
The expectations: Fans have been quoting lines from the original for 15 years. A sequel has to meet that standard, and it will be compared to Vidya Balan’s performance from the first frame.
The mystery: Ektaa has said the story will centre on a person but has not named her. That has set off a guessing game among fans, who are already debating which woman from film, TV or pop culture might fit. Nothing has been confirmed, so these remain pure speculation.
The theme: Ektaa’s comments suggest a more empowered take. If the first film showed a woman judged for her sexuality, the sequel might show a woman who owns it. That shift reflects how conversations about women and desire have changed since 2011.
What It Means for Everyone Involved
For Ektaa Kapoor: Known mostly for her television empire, she has also produced edgy, headline-grabbing films. A successful sequel would remind the industry that she can still deliver big cinematic bets, and it would add to the buzz around her upcoming slate.
For the franchise: This isn’t a straightforward continuation, since the original was a biopic. Instead, the sequel looks set to be a spiritual follow-up with a new subject, which gives the makers more creative freedom and a fresh start.
For casting: The lead role will be one of the most-watched casting decisions in Bollywood. Whoever gets it will carry the weight of Vidya’s legacy, so expect intense speculation until an official announcement.
For women-led cinema: A high-profile sequel centred on a woman’s story, backed by a well-known producer, strengthens the argument for bold female-led films. If it succeeds, it could encourage more filmmakers to take similar risks.
The Risks
Real-life stories need care. The original was powerful partly because it treated its heroine with empathy while showing the industry’s harshness, and the sequel will need to strike the same balance. Making a film about a real person’s life also raises questions about accuracy and consent, which will depend on who the subject is. And any film built on a daring reputation has to avoid becoming sensational for the sake of it.
There is also the matter of timing. A fresh announcement doesn’t guarantee a quick production. With no director, cast or dates revealed, fans may be waiting a while.
What to Watch Next
- The official announcement: Ektaa has hinted that a bigger reveal will come, possibly naming the subject and the cast.
- Casting news: Will Vidya Balan have any connection to the sequel? Nothing has been confirmed.
- Director and writers: The creative team will shape how closely the film echoes the original.
- Release plans: Theatres, streaming or both haven’t been announced.
The Bottom Line
The Dirty Picture showed that audiences were ready for honest, daring stories about women. Fifteen years later, Ektaa Kapoor is betting they still are. Until the next reveal, the film’s biggest star is its mystery, and Bollywood is already asking one question: whose picture is next?
